Pull all of your hair down to the back of your neck and twist it. Gather your hair into a low ponytail at the base of the neck.
Get some styling gel and apply it to the ponytail to keep it manageable, then twist the hair in the ponytail.
Wrap the hair of the ponytail around the base of the ponytail itself creating a bun, and secure it with pins or another ponytail holder, or even better, use both pins and a ponytail holder to secure the bun.
Finally spray the hair with hairspray to keep your formal updo in place.

Put styling gel into damp hair and blow dry until hair is completely dry. Then curl the hair with either a curling iron, or rollers.
Smooth over your hair with pomade to get rid of any flyaway hairs, and smooth the hair into a low ponytail on the back of your neck.
Roll one inch pieces of your hair around two fingers and use hair pins to secure each curl to your head. When finished, spray your chignon updo with hairspray and you’ve got a finished curly chignon formal updo.
